LASEPA, NPA Collaborate To Fight Pollution In Lagos

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), have exppressed willingness to collaborate towards achieving a pollution free and cleaner, sustainable environment in Lagos.

Both agencies, on Tuesday, agreed to strengthen collaboration that would help promote and protect the environment from pollution and other environmental violations that may have direct consequences on human health and the ecosystem.

This was part of the agreement reached during a meeting between the officials of the two agencies. The meeting held at the NPA office, Marina, Lagos, was between LASEPA and NPA, led by the General Manager, LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi and NPA’s Acting General Manager, Engr. Adekunle Adesona.

During the meeting, LASEPA General Manager noted the need for collaboration and mutual cooperation between both agencies in different areas of environmental management so as to make the goal of a safe and sustainable environment possible in Lagos State.

Ajayi who was accompanied to the meeting by top government officials from his agency, stressed the need for understanding and joint effort in tackling environment challenges in the state, noting that Lagos State remains the first point of contact and responce in any emergency situation. He, therefore, called for proper enforcement of the State Environmental Regulations for protection of human life and the ecosystem.

His words: “The purpose of this meeting is to explore opportunities for collaboration and mutual cooperation between LASEPA and NPA in various areas relating to environmental sustainability, particularly tank farms management, issue of oil spillage, monitoring and enforcement, submission of statutory reports; audit, environmental, contingency among others.”

Responding, NPA’s Acting General Manager, Engr. Adekunle Adesona, represented by Mr. Emeka Uchendu, NPA’s Principal Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, expressed NPA’s readiness to work closely with LASEPA to implement environmental friendly policies that would promote the growth of sustainable environment that would promote a new emerging smart Lagos.

Uchendu disclosed that NPA had embarked on some initiatives to further promote the growth of a clean and sustainable environment state.

He urged the state government to equally intensify efforts in its various advocacy programme on market sanitisation, tree planting, flood free Lagos, emission control, reduction in the use of non-biodegradable elements among other initiatives.
