Lagos upscale water supply amid pipeline challenges

By Abbas Nazil

The Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC) has announced a significant increase in water production from its Iju and Adiyan waterworks, reflecting its commitment to enhancing water supply for residents across Lagos State.

Despite this progress, the Corporation has faced challenges, including high-pressure pipeline bursts reported along the Maryland-Ikorodu axis, which led to temporary flooding on major roads.

In a statement, Kehinde Fashola, Deputy Director of the Public Affairs Unit of the corporation, revealed that the bursts were caused by stolen fittings that exposed the pipeline flow line, allowing water to escape to the surface.

This theft not only led to water wastage but also compromised the structural integrity of the water pipelines in the affected areas.

To tackle the situation, the Managing Director of LSWC, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, personally led the distribution team to the site.

Immediate measures were taken to halt the leaks and mitigate further damage. In addition, water production at the Iju and Adiyan Waterworks was temporarily suspended to ensure public safety and prevent escalation of the problem.

Engr. Tijani explained that the increase in water supply is part of ongoing efforts to enhance water production infrastructure across Lagos State.

While these upgrades may result in occasional leakages or disruptions, he assured residents that such issues would be promptly addressed.

He expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s (LASEMA) Cobra Response Team-Onipanu and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) for their rapid response in managing the situation.

While challenges such as pipeline bursts pose temporary setbacks, the LSWC remains focused on its mission to provide improved and reliable water supply to Lagos residents.

Residents are encouraged to remain patient and supportive as the Corporation continues its infrastructure upgrades to meet the growing water demands of the state.

The LSWC is urging residents to assist in maintaining the water distribution network by reporting any leaks or pipeline bursts immediately.
