Lagos State is set to launch full enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics starting July 1, 2025, as part of a bold initiative to combat environmental pollution.
The Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, announced the crackdown during a media briefing, warning that violators will face heavy fines of up to ₦250,000 or imprisonment for up to three months.
Wahab made it clear that illegal dumping, street littering, and other forms of environmental abuse will no longer be tolerated.
So far, more than 3,000 individuals have been arrested in ongoing compliance operations aimed at protecting the city’s environment.
The commissioner also reaffirmed existing bans on public defecation, illegal street trading, and cart pushers, underscoring the government’s commitment to a cleaner Lagos.
With the Eid-el-Kabir festivities approaching, Wahab urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly by bagging it properly and handing it over to licensed waste operators, rather than dumping it in public spaces or drains.
“This is not just about punishment; it’s about safeguarding our environment for ourselves and future generations. The time for change is now,” Wahab said, calling on all Lagosians to play their part in protecting the state.
