The Lagos State Government has closed the Ajah market in Etti-Osa Local Government and the Ogba City Mall in Ikeja as a result of indiscriminate waste disposal practices.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos Government Special Environmental Corps (KAI), and the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offenses (LASTMA) collaborated to execute the operation on Sunday.
This was stated in a statement made available on Sunday, November 5, 2023, in Lagos, by Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, Director of Public Affairs of LAWMA.
According to Kadiri, the enforcement team also cleaned the structures of shanties and illegal vendors along the Ajah Jubilee Bridge and the BRT path.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Mr. Tokunbo Wahab commented on the development, stating that the enforcement was a continuation of the administration’s campaign against filth and careless trash disposal by marketplaces and commercial establishments around the state.
“This administration will not tolerate filth or careless garbage disposal by retailers or commercial establishments, thus we are intensifying our efforts in this regard.
“We have consistently cautioned entrepreneurs to anticipate consequences if they neglect to take necessary measures to maintain the environment,” he declared.
The commissioner declared that the government of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will not give up on the noble goal of advancing the paramount welfare of the people.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, stated that the zero tolerance campaign was ongoing and that businesses and marketplaces should take action to guarantee a sanitary and hygienic environment.
“We are urging all market operators and business owners to avoid filth and implement steps to ensure responsible garbage disposal in their locations of operation for the umpteenth time,” he declared.
Gbadegesin pleaded with them to follow the regulations, threatening to bring enforcement action to their doorsteps.
