Lagos seeks partnerships to tackle water supply gap

The Lagos State Government has said it is exploring strategic partnerships to address the state’s persistent water supply gap and improve access to safe drinking water.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday to mark World Water Day.
Wahab said the initiative is aimed at reducing overreliance on private boreholes and wells while strengthening public water infrastructure to meet the needs of the state’s growing population.
According to him, the government is rehabilitating existing waterworks, investing in new infrastructure, and seeking partnerships to attract technical expertise and funding into the sector.
He added that the state has set a target of ensuring that all households have access to clean and safe water by 2027.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of sustainable water management practices and inclusive access, noting that millions of people globally still lack access to safe water.
Despite ongoing efforts, access to potable water remains a challenge in many parts of Lagos, with a large number of residents depending on boreholes, wells, and water vendors for daily needs.
Observers say closing the supply gap will require sustained investment, improved infrastructure, and effective collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders.
