Lagos Secures 6 New Trains for Blue, Red Lines
By Faridat Salifu
In a major boost to Lagos’s transportation infrastructure, six new train sets are on their way to the tracks to enhance the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines.
This development, announced recently by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu through his official social media page, is expected to significantly improve the capacity and efficiency of the city’s rail network, which has been a vital part of the state’s efforts to ease congestion and boost economic activity.
The new trains, which have already passed factory acceptance tests, are scheduled for shipment in the coming weeks.
Once they arrive, they will increase the frequency of trips on the Blue Line, which has already been transforming commuter experiences since its initial launch in September 2023.
The Blue Line, running from Marina to Mile 2, currently operates 72 daily trips and has become a key mode of transport for thousands of Lagosians.
With the new trains, the state will be able to increase service capacity, ensuring faster and more reliable travel for passengers.
The new trains are also integral to the completion of Phase Two of the Blue Line, a critical expansion project that will extend the rail network by 14 kilometers from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.
This phase, once completed, will not only connect additional neighborhoods to the city’s transport system, but will also support the growing population and urbanization of these areas, making the Blue Line a lifeline for even more residents of Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that this expansion is part of the state’s broader vision to create a “Greater Lagos” with a world-class transportation system.
The addition of the new trains and the extension of the Blue Line are a testament to the state’s commitment to reducing traffic congestion, enhancing public transport accessibility, and supporting the economic growth of Lagos.
Lagos, Africa’s most populous city, faces significant challenges related to traffic congestion, with millions of people relying on a transport system that has historically struggled to meet demand.
The ongoing investment in rail infrastructure is a critical step towards transforming commuting in the city and providing Lagosians with faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation options.
In addition to the direct benefits to commuters, the expanded rail network will also help reduce road traffic, lower carbon emissions, and contribute to the broader goals of sustainability and climate resilience.
The LRMT Blue and Red Lines are expected to play a central role in easing the strain on Lagos’s roads while supporting a more interconnected city.
As part of its long-term vision, the Lagos State Government plans further upgrades and expansions to its transport systems, including additional rail lines, more buses, and improved infrastructure across the city.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that the future of transportation in Lagos is not only about new trains and rail lines but about creating a more efficient, sustainable, and accessible transport system that meets the needs of all residents.
