Lagos seals NITEL building over sewage discharge

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Lagos State Government has sealed the NITEL building on Macarthy Street, Obalende, over alleged environmental violations.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement posted on his X handle on February 21, 2026.

According to Wahab, the enforcement was carried out on February 20 by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) in collaboration with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI).

He said the property was sealed for the deliberate discharge of raw sewage into public drains, resulting in environmental pollution, public nuisance and health risks.

The commissioner also noted that squatters occupying the old NITEL building could not be properly identified or accounted for, adding that they were residing there without authorisation or coordination.

He urged residents to adopt proper wastewater management and hygiene practices to safeguard public health and promote environmental sustainability.

Wahab warned that acts constituting environmental nuisance would attract sanctions and possible prosecution.
