Lagos reiterates commitment to water transport expansion
By Abdullahi Lukman
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding water transportation as a viable alternative to road travel, with the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, paying a working visit to the Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) last Friday.
The visit was part of Osiyemi’s ongoing engagements with agencies under the Ministry of Transportation to review performance and align strategies ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.
During the visit, he highlighted the Omi-Eko Project as a key initiative aimed at decongesting roads and promoting sustainable mobility across the state.
Osiyemi was received by the Managing Director of LAGFERRY, Hon. Abdoubaq Ladi Balogun, who presented the agency’s 2025 performance report as well as its operational plans and growth targets for 2026.
The Commissioner commended LAGFERRY for improvements in water transport services, noting that enhanced infrastructure and operations have boosted public confidence and widened commuting options for residents.
He explained that the Omi-Eko Project would further strengthen the sector through the construction of new jetties, dredging of additional waterways and the deployment of 75 electric ferries along key routes.
Osiyemi also urged agencies under the ministry to embrace a unified vision, effective collaboration and clear operational strategies to ensure the successful delivery of transportation goals in 2026.
Earlier in the week, the Commissioner had held similar strategic discussions during visits to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL).
