Lagos govt trains highway sweepers on job risks, safety

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has conducted a health and safety training exercise for highway sweepers amid concerns over occupational hazards on major roads.

The training, held along the Ikate–Elegushi corridor of the Lekki–Epe Expressway, focused on the proper use of personal protective equipment, including gloves, masks, and safety boots, as well as the safe handling and disposal of hazardous waste.

In a statement signed by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, the exercise was described as part of ongoing measures to improve workers’ efficiency and reduce exposure to health risks.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the initiative underscored the agency’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its workforce.

He noted that highway sweepers operate under challenging conditions, often exposed to vehicular traffic, harsh weather, and potentially hazardous waste materials.

Gbadegesin explained that the training formed part of a broader strategy to strengthen safety protocols and ensure that workers were adequately equipped to carry out their duties professionally and safely.

“Frontline sanitation workers operate in demanding environments and must be provided with the right knowledge, tools, and protective gear to minimise occupational risks and enhance productivity,” he said.

He added that the authority would sustain regular capacity-building programmes and safety awareness initiatives to entrench a culture of safety across its operations
