Lagos Govt Intensifies Efforts to Combat Open Defecation, Arrests 20

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has apprehended 20 individuals for open defecation in the Ojodu Berger area. This action underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, shared the news on his X handle, highlighting the ongoing patrol and monitoring efforts by LAGESC.

“During patrol and monitoring of Ojodu – Berger yesterday (Saturday) night and early hours of today (Sunday), operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps #LAGESCOfficial arrested 20 individuals for committing environmental infractions,” Wahab stated.

This crackdown follows an earlier announcement by Gaji Tajudeen, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, regarding the state’s plan to prosecute those engaging in open defecation, particularly along the Berger Expressway.

Wahab also posted a video showcasing the aerial view of the median at Berger, emphasising the impact of continuous clean-up, enforcement, and round-the-clock monitoring in the area.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve sanitation and public health standards across Lagos, reflecting the government’s dedication to creating a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
