Lagos Commissions First Flood-resilient Road

By Faridat Salifu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recently inaugurated the Abiola-Onijemo Link Road and Bridge in Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area, emphasizing its environmental and infrastructural impact.

The newly constructed road, connecting the Abiola/Ajayi/Ogba and Obawole/Iju-Ishaga communities, integrates sustainable design features aimed at addressing long-standing environmental challenges.

Central to the project is a reinforced concrete bridge equipped with a modern drainage system, designed to mitigate recurrent flooding that has plagued the area.

Retaining walls further enhance structural stability, ensuring protection for surrounding neighborhoods.

Solar-powered streetlights have been installed along the carriageways, slip roads, and pedestrian walkways, underscoring the state’s commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Speaking at the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu described the project as a transformative step towards achieving a “Greater Lagos.”

He noted that beyond infrastructure, the road fosters community cohesion and supports economic growth while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

“This road not only connects communities but also resolves critical flooding issues. It reflects our vision of a resilient and inclusive Lagos that works for everyone,” the governor said.

The Abiola-Onijemo Link Road is one of 36 newly completed roads and bridges being commissioned this week as part of the administration’s efforts to conclude the year on a strong developmental note.

Earlier in the day, Sanwo-Olu inspected the newly reconstructed Alapere Pedestrian Bridge, previously damaged by heavy-duty vehicles. The upgraded structure has been elevated and fitted with CCTV cameras to ensure safety and longevity.

The governor urged residents to take collective ownership of the new infrastructure, stating that responsible usage would sustain its environmental and economic benefits.

“Our focus remains clear: building a Lagos that prioritizes both the people and the environment,” he added.

As Lagos State moves forward with its ambitious infrastructure agenda, these projects signal a commitment to addressing urban challenges through innovative and environmentally conscious solutions.
