The Lagos State Government is pushing for widespread adoption of technology and artificial intelligence in agriculture as a key solution to food insecurity and rising urban demand.
At a pre-season training session organized by the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority (LSADA) recently , stakeholders were urged to embrace innovative, tech-based farming practices to boost food production across the state.
Held at the Women’s Development Centre in Agege, the event drew agricultural extension agents, farmer group representatives, and sector professionals under the theme: “AI-Powered Urban Agriculture in Lagos State: Enhancing Agricultural Extension Services for Increased Food Production.”
LSADA Project Manager, Aliru Alade, said the training is a vital part of efforts to prepare field officers for the new farming season and empower them with data-driven solutions to scale productivity.
Represented by Aderonke Toju-Tubi, Director of Rural Institution Development, Alade noted that Lagos is pioneering the integration of smart technology into urban agriculture to overcome space, logistics, and productivity barriers.
“This initiative aims to equip our farmers with cutting-edge knowledge and modern techniques that will significantly improve both the quality and quantity of agricultural output across the state,” he said.
Alade also credited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for sustaining a policy framework that empowers farmers and strengthens food systems through digital innovation and training.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Systems, Oluwarotimi Fashola, described the training as a bold step toward fortifying Lagos’ agricultural resilience and strengthening the backbone of local food supply.
He emphasized that empowering extension workers and farmers with AI-enhanced knowledge is not only timely, but critical for future-proofing the state’s food economy.
