Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Designed for 50-year Flood Resilience – Minister

By Abdullahi Lukman

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has assured that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is engineered to withstand flooding for 50 years.

He provided this update during a stakeholder engagement for Section 2 of the project on Sunday, April 6, 2025, in Lagos.

Umahi emphasized the importance of elevated pavement levels, which will be set at the height of the first floor of nearby buildings to combat climate change impacts.

“We will make sure that our pavement level is going to counter any climate change,” he stated.

To enhance road retention, the project will include retaining boards, which construction has already commenced.

The highway will also feature cable ducts to facilitate utility installations without needing to disrupt the road surface, allowing for efficient management of services from companies like MTN and African Plus.

The minister further announced the installation of closed-circuit television cameras along the highway to ensure a rapid response time of under five minutes for any incidents. Additionally, an evacuation corridor will be integrated into the design to enhance safety.

Umahi noted that the use of concrete pavement will earn carbon credits, contributing to environmentally friendly construction practices.

Plans also include extensive tree planting along the corridor to enhance the highway’s aesthetic appeal.

The highway’s design accommodates heavy vehicle traffic, including operations related to the Dangote Refinery. To facilitate this, a flyover with a span of 60 meters will be constructed, alongside a 41.6-meter counterbalance span.

In a bid to provide amenities, Umahi revealed plans for relief centers along the corridor, which will offer snacks, fuel, and additional services like supermarkets and medical facilities.

The minister expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their involvement, highlighting their commitment to the project’s development.

He commended Hitech Construction Company, the project contractor, for their quality work and adherence to timelines.
