Lafarge Africa Reduces Dust Emissions with New Technology
By Rashidat Oladele
Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading building solutions company, has recently installed a new bag filter technology at its Ewekoro plant in Ogun State.
The technology is expected to reduce dust emissions from the plant and improve the air quality in the surrounding environment.
The company said that the new technology is part of its commitment to promoting environmentally sustainable operations and complying with Nigerian regulatory standards.
The company also said that it has conducted a comprehensive social impact assessment in its Ewekoro plant and implemented a robust action plan to minimize the impact of its operations on its host communities.
The bag filter technology replaces the old electrostatic precipitator (ESP) system, which was less effective in capturing dust particles. The bag filter system uses fabric filters to trap and remove dust from the exhaust gas stream.
The system also monitors the dust emission levels in real time and ensures that they are within the regulatory limit of 50mg/Nm3.
The company said that the installation of the new technology was completed in six months and was validated by the National Environmental Standard and Regulations Agency (NESREA) and other government accredited agencies.
The company also said that it has taken measures to reduce fugitive emissions from other sources, such as roads surrounding its plants.
The company also reiterated its allegiance to the health, safety and well-being of its employees and stakeholders. It said that it sets high standards for health, safety and the environment (HSE) and invests in research and innovation to achieve them.
The company also highlighted its corporate social responsibility initiatives in its host communities, such as providing business and vocational skills, education grants, community projects, agricultural funds, healthcare and education facilities, among others.
