African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF), has elected the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe, as its substantive chairman.
By Komolafe’s election, Nigeria is the forum’s headquarters.
Komolafe, who previously served as interim chairman, was confirmed during the inaugural executive committee meeting held virtually, which was attended by representatives from 16 African countries of the forum.
AFRIPERF was established to strengthen petroleum governance across Africa by harmonising regulations, promoting investment and fostering collaboration among national regulators.
The NURPC in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday, said a major highlight of the agenda of the meeting was the proposed redesign of the AFRIPERF logo to better reflect unity among member states.
The statement read in part: “The new concept, featuring the African map to symbolize a “Green Africa,” received broad support.
“Delegates from Morocco, Ghana, Guinea, Sierra Leone and others provided constructive recommendations aimed at enhancing inclusivity, clarity and shared identity.
“The meeting also addressed the expansion of membership to include National Oil Companies (NOCs) that perform regulatory functions, particularly in both upstream and downstream operations. With no objections raised, the Interim Chairman announced that formal extension notices will be issued to eligible NOCs, further widening AFRIPERF’s scope and regional influence.
“Another pivotal decision under the Interim Chairman’s session was the nomination and voting for the Chairman and Secretariat of AFRIPERF.
“Eng. Gbenga Komolafe, representing Nigeria, emerged as the winner by majority vote, resulting in Nigeria being confirmed asAFRIPERF’s headquarters while he retains the position of Chairman.”
In his acceptance remarks, the Komolafe expressed sincere appreciation to all members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to give his best in serving the forum.
