By Daniel Itai

The Kenyan Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Korea to produce Korean rice.

According to the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mithika Linturi, this collaboration will benefit Kenya particularly in the technological advancement of rice production.

“I have this morning attended a Ministerial round table meeting in Seoul, South Korea, where on behalf of the Kenyan Government, I have signed a MoU dubbed K-rice belt.

In the MoU, Kenya and other six African countries will collaborate with the South Korean Government to pursue a project of building a Korean rice belt in Africa, known as the K-Rice Belt, under which Korea’s rice farming expertise will be shared and rice varieties supplied to seven African countries.

South Korea is a role model in rice production where they transitioned from a food recipient country to a food exporter. This collaboration will benefit Kenya largely, including technological advancement in rice production, with this kind of partnerships and innovations, Kenya will surely overcome food insecurity despite the climate change challenges,” said Linturi.

In addition, Kenyan President William Ruto said access to the latest farming trends and technologies will increase yields, expand farmer incomes, and move the country closer to food security noting that improved agricultural productivity and value addition are pillars of the Government’s Bottom Up Economic Transformative Agenda which will remake the country’s agriculture, steady food supply and create more raw materials for industry.
