Mithika Linturi, the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, has launched a KShs. 5.398 billion (approximately US$38.5 million) project aimed at enhancing food security in Baringo County.
According to the Ministry, the project launched on Thursday, is part of the Build Resilience For Food and Nutrition Security (BREFONS) program.
BREFONS is a multinational program covering six African countries, including Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.
In Baringo County, the project will focus on rehabilitating the Kinene Irrigation Scheme, constructing water pans, boreholes, shallow wells, sub-surface dams, livestock markets, and hay sheds.
The project will also support the mapping of degraded areas, promote fruit tree planting, provide income-generating activities and equipment for selected community groups, as well as allocate funds for agribusiness development, capacity building, and strengthening of institutions.
“This afternoon, I have launched BREFONS at Mr. William Kimosop’s Farm in Mogotio, Baringo County.
This launch highlights the government’s commitment to invest in ASAL (Arid and Semi-arid Lands) areas to unlock their potential for development.
It complements other ongoing projects in Baringo County, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to address food security and agricultural development,” said Linturi.
Linturi urged the people of Baringo to embrace these initiatives and encouraged stakeholders to support the government’s efforts in achieving food and nutrition security in the ASAL communities.
Additionally, Linturi cited that Kenya has committed itself to initiatives targeting youth, digital innovation, diverse diets, and gender as leading actions in the implementation of food systems.
