Kebbi community residents drink unsafe water, battle waterborne diseases

In Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, owing to the contaminated water which the residents drink and used for domestic choresin the last couple of decades, they are now battling with different kinds of waterborne diseases.

Residents complained that for years, they have been complaining to the state government, including their representatives at the State House of Assembly and National Assembly and seek their assistance in drilling boreholes but their complaints was not listened to.

An elderly resident in the local government area, Mohammed Yahaya, noted that the government is aware of their predicament but they were left to take cre of the contaminate water challenges in the area. He said people in the area have no choice of water to drink but the contaminate water.

”We are fed up with these so clled people’s representatives that cannot provide ordinary drinkable water for the residents of the area they represented at the National and the State House of Assembly. We only see them show their faces when it is time for election. Here we are in the last 30 years, we have been drinking this contamintae water.

”Many people in this area is nurturing one watreborne disease or the other. There is no functioning health facility around in spite of different kinds of sickness sourced from the contaminated water,” Yahaya said.

He added that the contaminated water issue is paramount among the reasons listed in the recent petition they wrote to the Independent Ntional Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding for a recall of their representative at the Upper Chamber.
