Katsina to create Nigeria’s pioneer renewable energy ministry

By Abbas Nazil

Katsina State government has announced plans to establish Nigeria’s pioneer Ministry of Power, Renewable Energy, and Energy Security to drive the state’s transition to clean and affordable energy.

The state governor, Dikko Umar Radda, made the announcement at the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit held at the Landmark Convention Centre in Lagos, where he was represented by his deputy, Faruk Lawal Jobe.

Radda stated that the new ministry would coordinate all energy-related programs across the state, strengthen rural electrification, and attract investments in solar, wind, hydro, and gas-based power projects.

He revealed that over 10 megawatts of solar systems with battery storage are being installed across key public facilities such as hospitals, universities, and waterworks.

The governor said a completed 1MW solar plant at the State Secretariat now powers government offices and reduces reliance on diesel.

He also said that the state’s Liquefied and Compressed Natural Gas facility, developed in partnership with Greenville LNG Limited, is 90 per cent completed and will soon be commissioned to support gas-based power generation and vehicle conversion to CNG.

Radda highlighted the state’s renewable energy potential, noting that Katsina hosts Nigeria’s first wind farm, the 10MW Lambar Rimi project, which will soon be hybridised with solar to create one of West Africa’s first wind-solar hybrid systems.

He mentioned a 1MW mini-hydro project at Danja Dam, supported by the French Treasury and Oceans Énergie, to power rural communities and irrigation schemes.

The governor said Katsina is collaborating with Kano and Jigawa states under the Future Energies Africa initiative to establish a North-West Regional Electricity Market that will enhance power supply and private sector participation.

Radda said the government is also providing stand-alone solar systems to power small businesses such as welding workshops, cold rooms, and ICT hubs to empower young entrepreneurs.

He reaffirmed that energy security remains essential for Katsina State’s education, healthcare, and economic growth.
