The Katsina State government has unveiled a N5.7 billion goat rearing initiative aimed at empowering 3,610 women across the state’s 361 wards, with each recipient receiving four goats.
Governor Dikko Radda launched the program at Dan-Nakolo in Daura Local Government Area, emphasizing the initiative’s importance in driving agricultural development and promoting self-sufficiency in the region.
Governor Radda highlighted the initiative as a significant step in making Katsina a leader in food security and sustainable farming practices within Northern Nigeria.
He stressed that livestock farming, particularly goat rearing, is a vital part of the state’s cultural heritage, food security, and economic growth.
The governor explained that the initiative seeks to provide local farmers, especially women, with the resources, training, and support necessary to successfully breed and manage goats.
Radda also outlined the state’s commitment to advancing livestock breeding through the adoption of best practices in genetic improvement and productivity enhancement.
The governor said by focusing on animal nutrition, health management, and sustainable farming techniques, the state aims to improve livestock health and increase productivity.
He further mentioned that specialized training programs would be offered to farmers to help them develop the skills needed to operate effective goat breeding enterprises.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create sustainable livelihoods for farmers and diversify the state’s economy by strengthening the local livestock market.
Governor Radda expressed his administration’s determination to provide the support necessary for farmers to remain competitive and resilient despite economic challenges.
Yusuf Suleiman, the Special Adviser to the governor on livestock, grazing, and reserves, also commented on the program’s significance, emphasizing the essential role that women play in driving economic progress and improving community livelihoods.
Suleiman noted that the initiative would not only empower women but also foster inclusive growth and poverty reduction across Katsina State.
The distribution of the goats marks a clear commitment by the state government to reducing poverty and empowering rural communities, with a special focus on women as key agents of positive change.
