Kano’s Ungogo LGA to tackle desertification by planting 10,000 trees

The Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, has inaugurated a tree planting campaign committee, aiming to plant ten thousand trees across its eleven wards.

The initiative, spearheaded by Interim Management Officer Sani Abdu Ungogo, was officially launched on Thursday at the Chairman’s office with local officials, community leaders, and residents in attendance.

According to Abdu Ungogo, this initiativebis part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf broader environmental agenda, seeking to improve air quality, reduce soil erosion, and enhance the natural beauty of Ungogo.

Emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation, Sani Abdu Ungogo stated, “Trees are essential to our ecosystem, providing oxygen, improving air quality, and supporting wildlife. This campaign is a testament to our commitment to creating a greener, healthier environment for future generations.”

He said the campaign will target several key areas within each ward, including schools, parks, and roadside locations. Special emphasis will be placed on planting indigenous tree species known for their resilience and ecological benefits.

The initiative has garnered significant community involvement, with volunteers from local NGOs, students, and residents actively participating in the planting efforts.

The Director of Personal Management, Munzali Alhassan, explained that the launch symbolized the beginning of the tree planting project.

He also noted that the event featured educational sessions on the importance of trees and proper tree care.

In the meantime, the tree planting committee will operate for six months and they are to ensure the newly planted trees thrive and contribute positively to sustainable of the environment.

Ibrahim Shehu Abubakar, HOD of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Ungogo, highlighted that this campaign aligns with the state government’s broader environmental policies and supports global efforts to combat climate change.

He urged all residents to actively participate in the campaign and take responsibility for the care and protection of the newly planted trees, adding that the tree planting campaign has been named “Dashe Gida Gida.”
