Kano wheat farmers decry delay in dry season intervention

Wheat farmers in Kano State have raised alarm over the federal government’s delay to roll out its dry-season wheat intervention, warning that the delay is already hurting production as the 2025/2026 farming season progresses.

The apex government has yet to deliver its promised dry-season wheat intervention in Kano State, leaving farmers worried as the 2025/2026 farming season progresses.

Speaking in Garun Malam Local Government Area, farmer Malam Habibu Garba said many had prepared their land and planted crops expecting government support under the National Wheat Intervention Programme, but nothing has been delivered so far.

“Farmers have prepared their farms, and planted in anticipation of the intervention; Unfortunately, nothing has come, and there has been no explanation,” Garba said.

The programme, part of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP), was designed to cover about 3,000 hectares in Kano, with each farmer receiving a 50kg bag of improved wheat seeds and three bags of fertiliser at a 50 percent subsidy.

Shehu Bello Bahago, another farmer, warned that the delay could discourage farmers and affect output.

“Many invested heavily this season based on last year’s experience,” he said, lamenting, “Without the intervention, some may be forced to abandon their farms,” he said.

The Kano State Chairman of the Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria (WFAN), Alhaji Musa Shehu, confirmed that none of the farmers had received the promised support and said letters had been sent to authorities seeking clarification.

Some farmers also raised concerns about alleged large-scale wheat importation by the federal government, claiming that silos across the country are being stocked with imported wheat, which could undermine local production.

Efforts to reach the Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Kano zone, for comment were unsuccessful as of filing this report.
