Kano State government has recruited 1,038 agricultural extension workers to boost agricultural production across the state.
Presenting recruitment letters to the extension workers in Kano on Monday, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the decision as fulfilment of a key campaign promise aimed at improving food security and boosting household incomes across the state.
Yusuf emphasized the importance of expanding the agricultural workforce to meet the growing needs of farmers and increase food production.
Despite Kano having the highest number of extension workers in Nigeria, the governor noted that more personnel are needed due to the rising demand in the agricultural sector.
Governor Yusuf cautioned the recruits against misconduct, including misuse of public funds, absenteeism, and negligence, highlighting their critical role in supporting rural communities and driving agricultural development.
In addition, he announced a new project—the construction of a two-kilometre-long earth dam—which is expected to irrigate 3 million square metres of farmland and create 2,800 hectares of irrigation land.
The dam forms part of a wider effort to expand the state’s agricultural land and introduce innovative farming practices.
The governor also revealed plans to hire over 5,000 additional youths, 3,900 teachers, and 1,500 lecturers to strengthen various sectors within the state.
