Kano purchases 10 high-capacity pumps to improve water supply

The Kano State government has acquired ten high-capacity water pumps worth over N1 billion to improve the state’s water supply.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Umar Doguwa, disclosed this during an inspection at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, where the newly purchased pumps were showcased.
Doguwa emphasized that the state has been facing a critical water shortage, prompting Governor Abba Yusuf to take swift action.
He noted that as an engineer, the governor personally assessed the state’s water treatment plants and identified faulty raw water pumps as the main cause of the problem.
To address the issue, the commissioner said six pumps with a capacity of 110 kilowatts each will be installed at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant, while four pumps with a capacity of 160 kilowatts each will be placed at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant.
The commissioner issued a strong warning against the misuse of treated water, particularly the illegal diversion of water for farming.
He stressed that some individuals and industries were illegally channeling government-supplied water for agricultural purposes while residents struggled with shortages.
Doguwa said investigations are ongoing to identify those involved, and Doguwa warned that lands found to be engaging in such activities may be seized.
He raised concerns over water theft, where people illegally siphon water from hydrants meant for emergency use.
Surveillance measures have been intensified, and anyone caught in the act will face penalties.
He further urged industries and commercial establishments in the state to pay their water bills promptly, making it clear that the government would no longer tolerate free access to public water resources.
As part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance water supply, Doguwa announced that efforts were underway to restore pipe-borne water to Dambatta Town, which has been without a public water supply for nine years.
He reassured residents that significant progress had already been made and that their water supply would soon be restored.
Doguwa underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that every town in Kano has adequate access to clean water.
He emphasized that the project was not being rushed, as the government prioritized quality work that would be durable and reliable.
