Kano, Morocco to Forge Strategic Ties on Renewable Energy and Agriculture

_By Abbas Nazil_

The Kano State Government is poised to sign key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Moroccan Government and the Moroccan Chamber of Commerce, marking a significant step toward advancing renewable energy initiatives and strengthening the agricultural value chain in the state.

This development was disclosed by the Director General of the Kano State Investment Promotion Agency (Kan-Invest), Muhammad Nazir Halliru, in a statement issued on Friday.

The agreements are a product of a recent high-level investment mission to Morocco led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, during which strategic talks were held with the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), the Moroccan Chamber of Commerce, and OCP Africa, a global leader in fertilizer production.

According to Halliru, one of the major highlights of the visit is MASEN’s commitment to collaborate with Kano State in the area of renewable energy transition.

MASEN will provide technical assistance by sharing best practices and insights from its 500-megawatt solar power plant in Ouarzazate, one of the largest in Africa.

The partnership will also involve identifying potential investors, designing financing models, and sharing technical expertise, all of which are expected to significantly support Kano’s ambitious “Light-Up Kano” initiative. The initiative targets the generation of 2,000 megawatts of solar energy within five years.

The agreement with MASEN also includes support for renewable energy technology, particularly in power storage systems and the distribution of electricity to industrial zones.

This move is seen as a critical step toward addressing power supply challenges that have long hindered industrial growth in the state.

Additionally, the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce, known as a major hub for Africa’s private sector engagement, expressed interest in collaborating with the Kano State Government.

Areas of mutual investment identified include solid minerals development and furthering the renewable energy transition in the region.

This partnership is expected to attract co-investments and boost Kano’s drive for economic diversification.

In a parallel effort, OCP Africa has pledged to partner with Kano State on several agricultural development projects.

The collaboration will focus on improving fertilizer supply chains, establishing fertilizer blending plants, and supporting smallholder farmers with modern farming technologies.

These initiatives aim to enhance productivity, increase food security, and contribute to rural development in Kano.

The Kano delegation to Morocco included several top officials such as the Special Adviser to the Governor on State Affairs, Usman Bala; Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya; Commissioner for History and Culture, Aisha L. Saji; Commissioner for Special Duties, Nasiru Sule Garo; and Special Adviser on Health Services, Ibrahim Musa.

Also part of the delegation were the Director General of Kan-Invest, Muhammad Nazir Halliru; the Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Nature Dawakin Tofa; the Managing Director of Kano Agricultural Supply Company; and a representative of the Kano State Emirate Council, Sarkin Shanun Kano, Alhaji Shehu Muhammad Dankadai.

This international partnership marks a new chapter in Kano State’s development strategy, positioning the state as a key player in sustainable energy and agricultural transformation in Nigeria and across West Africa.
