Kano, France strengthen partnership on water sector reform

Kano State and the Government of France on Wednesday renewed their collaboration under Nigeria’s National Water Sector Reform Programme, focusing on social impact, institutional strengthening, and sustainable water management.
According to a statement by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the renewed commitment followed a visit by the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, and his eight-member delegation to Government House, Kano.
The meeting reviewed ongoing water-sector projects and identified additional areas for cooperation.
Ambassador Fonbaustier said the size and expertise of the delegation reflected France’s strong interest in Kano and the northern region, noting that both countries share a “common destiny.”
He stressed that the reform programme prioritizes governance, capacity development, and long-term sustainability rather than hardware-focused investments.
He added that transportation and mobility also present opportunities for future collaboration.
Governor Yusuf commended France for its steady support in expanding access to safe and reliable water services.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to aligning state water policies with national reform goals, improving transparency, strengthening institutions, and providing efficient, socially responsive water services to residents.
