Kano Enacts Environmental Protection Laws

Kano State government has enacted a set of environmental protection laws aimed at addressing the escalating pollution issues affecting the state.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Hashim, announced this in Kano recently.
He said the new laws are designed to tackle pressing environmental challenges, including the discharge of harmful chemicals, indiscriminate dumping of waste, open defecation on public roads, and the release of untreated industrial wastewater.
Dr. Hashim emphasized the urgency of these issues, noting that they pose significant threats to public health and the environment.
To ensure effective implementation and community engagement, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is also to initiate an eight-week public sensitization campaign.
This campaign, the commissioner said, aims to educate residents, industries, and other stakeholders about the new laws, highlighting the importance of a clean and safe environment.
Dr. Hashim explained that the campaign is to involve workshops, informational sessions, and outreach activities designed to foster understanding and compliance among the public.
“Our goal is to make sure that everyone is aware of these regulations and understands their role in protecting our environment,” he stated.
Dr. Hashim expressed hope that the citizens of Kano would embrace the initiative, emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
“We cannot achieve our goals without the active participation of our community. Everyone has a part to play in safeguarding our environment for future generations,” he said.
Dr. Hashim reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship and urged residents to take pride in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
The new regulations, alongside the upcoming public campaign, represent a proactive approach to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the state. END
