kano disco begins 10mw solar power offtake from haske plant

By Faridat Salifu

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has begun sourcing 10MW of solar power from the Haske Solar Plant located in the Challawa Industrial Cluster, Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State, marking a significant step in renewable energy adoption in northern Nigeria.

The development follows the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) on August 20, 2025, in Abuja between KEDCO and Haske Solar Company Ltd, the operator of the plant.

The Haske facility, commissioned in January 2023, was developed by the federal government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and is managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).

KEDCO announced the offtake in a press release on X (formerly Twitter) late Wednesday, confirming that the integration of solar energy into the network has already begun.

Energy from the plant is being evacuated through the Abattoir Injection Substation and supplied to industrial customers via NBC 11kV and Ceramic 11kV feeders.

KEDCO’s MD/CEO, Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, described the initiative as a strategic step to improve network efficiency, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support Nigeria’s energy transition goals.

He emphasized that reliable solar power will protect jobs, boost competitiveness, and ensure industries continue operating without power interruptions.

Yusuf Usman Yahaya, MD/CEO of Future Energies Africa (FEA), KEDCO’s core investor, said the company is committed to delivering affordable, sustainable electricity through innovative solutions and partnerships.

The Haske Solar Plant represents a model for public-private collaboration in Nigeria’s clean energy sector, combining government infrastructure support with private operational expertise.

Analysts say such initiatives expand renewable energy capacity and provide a blueprint for scaling solar power to meet industrial and commercial demand across northern Nigeria.
