The Kaduna State Government has highlighted major improvements in its water sector as the world commemorates International Water Day, citing expanded access and ongoing infrastructure reforms under Governor Uba Sani.
Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the administration’s interventions have significantly improved water, sanitation and hygiene services, with about 1.5 million residents benefiting through the SURWASH programme.
He noted that since 2023, the government declared a state of emergency in the sector, accelerating reforms and rehabilitation projects.
These include clearing ₦900 million in salary arrears owed to Kaduna State Water Corporation staff and procuring thousands of metric tonnes of treatment chemicals to boost water supply.
According to him, water production capacity has risen from 450 million litres per day in 2023 to over 530 million litres per day in 2025, alongside more than ₦16 billion invested in rehabilitating six major treatment plants across key locations such as Kaduna, Zaria and Kafanchan.
The government has also expanded pipeline networks, built new reservoirs and installed critical equipment to stabilise supply systems across the state.
Maiyaki added that reforms have extended to governance, including the introduction of automated billing systems, recovery of ₦5.74 billion in counterpart funding for the Zaria Water Project and an ongoing review of the state’s water law.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to sustaining the reforms and ensuring equitable access to clean and safe water, describing the efforts as part of a broader plan to improve public health and support economic development.
