Jigawa govt inaugurate committees to resolve farmers-herders conflicts

By Faridat Salifu

Jigawa State Government has set up and inaugurated peace and reconciliation committees to foster friendly relationship between farmers and herders in the state.

With the establishment of these committees, the state government aims to address and prevent such conflicts, ensuring a sustainable and peaceful coexistence among its rural communities.

Secretary to the Jigawa State Government (SSG), Malam Bala Ibrahim, has inaugurated the committees in the Janwawa and Bagadaza areas under the Birnin Kudu and Gwaram Local Government Areas of the state.

During the inauguration ceremony, the SSG outlined the committees’ responsibilities, which include ensuring fairness in the allocation of farmland, demarcating stock routes and grazing reserves, and educating both farmers and herders about their interdependence and the importance of peaceful coexistence.

The committees are also tasked with encouraging disputing parties to resolve their differences amicably.

A significant aspect of the committees’ role is to prevent farmers from encroaching on water sources essential for livestock. The committees aim to mediate conflicts and uphold justice and fairness in land and resource distribution.

Alhaji Ado Ahmed, Chairman of the Committee for Janwawa in Sundumina District, expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to justify the confidence placed in them.

The committee members for Janwawa include local leaders, representatives from the police, army, DSS, NSCDC, and the Farmers and Herdsmen Board, with the D/DAGS Birnin Kudu Local Government Council serving as secretary.

Similarly, the Bagadaza Committee in Fagam District is chaired by Honourable Ada Yakubu Zandam and includes community leaders, representatives from security agencies, and the Special Adviser on Farmers and Herdsmen, with Associate Professor Salim Lawan Isawa as the secretary.

This initiative follows recent clashes between farmers and herders in Jigawa, which have disrupted the region’s peace.
