Innovation key to solving hunger in Nigeria – CAMIC

By Obiabin Onukwugha

Advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has stated that innovative agricultural practices is key to solving hunger problem in Nigeria.

The body observed that with the increasing impact of climate change, ensuring a stable food supply requires innovative and sustainable solutions.

The body made the submission on Tuesday, February 4, in a statement signed by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, urging policymakers, farmers, and stakeholders to adopt modern farming techniques to enhance food security in the country.

According to CAMIC, to reduce dependence on unpredictable rainfall, the government and private sector must invest in modern irrigation techniques such as drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, and solar-powered pumps to support year-round farming.

It also called on farmers to grow drought-resistant crops such as sorghum, millet, and improved maize varieties that thrive in harsh conditions, so as to ensure a stable food supply.

It further noted that implementing agroforestry practices—such as planting trees alongside crops—helps to improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and retain moisture, making farmlands more resilient to dry spells.

“CAMIC advocates for the adoption of rainwater harvesting and the construction of small reservoirs to store excess water during the rainy season for use in drier months.

“Encouraging integrated farming systems, such as fish farming alongside crop production, helps to diversify food sources and maximize land use efficiency,” the statement read.

CAMIC emphasised that post-harvest losses remain a major challenge, pointing out that investing in better storage facilities, cold chains, and improved transportation networks will prevent food waste and ensure food reaches consumers throughout the year.

The statement added: “CAMIC is committed to educating farmers and communities on best agricultural practices through workshops, media campaigns, and collaborations with research institutions.

“To secure Nigeria’s food future, government agencies, private investors, and development partners must work together to implement these sustainable agricultural strategies.

“CAMIC will continue to advocate for climate-smart policies and provide platforms for discussions on environmental resilience and food security.”
