Innoson to establish CNG plant in Bayelsa to boost green transport

By Abbas Nazil

Nigerian automobile manufacturer, Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing (IVM) Limited, has announced plans to establish a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) assembly plant in Bayelsa State to promote cleaner energy and strengthen the state’s industrial base.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of IVM, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Douye Diri in Yenagoa on Monday, October 13, 2025.

Chukwuma said the investment would transform Bayelsa’s transportation system, create employment opportunities, and provide training for local technicians while supporting Nigeria’s renewable energy transition goals.

He emphasized that the initiative would also promote environmental sustainability, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and help the country meet its renewable energy target by 2030.

The company’s Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Kamsi Ejiofor, explained that the project aims to introduce modern CNG buses, ambulances, and vehicles that would enhance mobility and efficiency across the state.

Ejiofor stated that the plant is expected to generate 1,000 direct jobs and several indirect opportunities in assembly, maintenance, logistics, and manufacturing, contributing significantly to Bayelsa’s economy.

He added that CNG-powered vehicles would reduce fuel and maintenance costs, improve air quality, and position Bayelsa as a pioneer in clean energy innovation.

Governor Douye Diri commended the company for choosing Bayelsa for the project, describing it as a major step toward diversifying the state’s economy and boosting industrial growth.

He assured the company of his administration’s readiness to collaborate with IVM to ensure the smooth implementation of the project, noting that the plan aligns with the government’s 2026 projection to procure CNG vehicles for public transport.

Diri reaffirmed his commitment to creating an enabling environment for investors through improved infrastructure, peace, security, and independent power supply.

He announced the establishment of an implementation committee led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, to coordinate with Innoson and ensure successful execution of the project.
