India: Heavy rainfall leaves Konkan areas flooded
The Rasayani police station in Panvel, parts of Uran, Pen, Khopoli in Khalapur, Mahad taluka in Raigad district in India, have been flooded since last week.
Flood waters of the swollen Patalganga river entered the Rasayani police station.
The low lying Mahad township area and a nearby Dadli bridge built over the Gandhari river in the British era reported flooding.
A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) fifth battalion-Pune is stationed in Mahad. The Chiplun township in Ratnagiri district has started flooding while the NDRF and the police are issuing warnings via public announcements.
Some parts of Khed taluka also reported flooding. Landslides also hit Parshuram ghat in Chiplun of the Mumbai-Goa highway.
The Konkan belt districts have been receiving heavy rainfall since earlier this week and a red alert has been issued by the meteorological department for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts.
Flooding has been reported with the swelling rivers at Khopoli, Uran, Mahad and Pen.
The Savitri River has flooded the Mahad township and swelling Gandhari river has put the 25-member NDRF fifth battalion team posted in Mahad on high alert.
The Rasayani police station was under knee-deep water for five hours (from 3 am to 8 am) on Wednesday. The low-lying police station has neither been relocated nor have any measures been taken in order to avoid flooding.
Its senior police inspector, Shatrughn Mali said, “A proposal was sent to the PWD two years ago for suitable measures, but its status will be checked.”
Assistant commandant of the NDRF team at Chiplun Justin Joseph said, “Parts of the Chiplun township is under flood water of Vashishti river. Its downstream convergence with Jagbudi river has also added to the woes. Our 21-member team has been here since July 15.”
Assistant commandant of NDRF team at Mahad Nikhil Mudholkar said, “The Mahad adjoining Poladpur taluka is under our surveillance. The situation in Mahad is slowly worsening with rising Savitri River water level. Rainwater flowing from Mahabaleshwar (Satara) hill terrains has added to the woes of both Mahad and Poladpur talukas.”
