The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has pledged to partner with Sierra Leone to transform its agricultural sector and address food insecurity.
This pledge was made during a visit by Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Bio, to the IITA headquarters in Ibadan.
IITA Director-General, Dr. Simeon Ehui, emphasized the institute’s readiness to deploy its technologies and innovations in crops like cassava, maize, and soybeans to enhance productivity and improve livelihoods in Sierra Leone.
He highlighted the potential for a significant agricultural revolution through collaborative efforts, focusing on high-yielding, pest-resistant, and climate-resilient crops.
President Bio commended IITA’s consistent role in driving agricultural transformation across Africa and expressed his commitment to fostering a world-class food system in Sierra Leone.
He stressed the importance of research, innovation, and technology in achieving this goal, noting that political will in Sierra Leone supports the country’s food system transformation.
The visit also underscored the potential for public-private partnerships to drive large-scale agricultural transformation.
IITA committed to scaling up technology, building human capital, and supporting agribusiness in Sierra Leone.
