HYPREP to Commission 2 New Water Schemes in Ogoni
By Abbas Nazil
The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) is set to commission two more water schemes in Ogoni, Rivers State, by February 2025 to enhance clean and safe drinking water provision to communities impacted by oil pollution.
These water schemes, located in Beeri and Bunu within Khana and Tai Local Government Areas, respectively, are nearing completion and are expected to bring much-needed relief to thousands of residents.
Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, the Project Coordinator of HYPREP, made this announcement during an inspection visit to the water facilities and remediation sites in K-Dere, Gokana Local Government Area.
He highlighted the progress of the ongoing projects, attributing the achievements to the dedication and hard work of community workers and contractors involved.
The two new water schemes will increase the total number of completed water projects by HYPREP in Ogoni to 16, a significant milestone in the organization’s efforts to address long-standing environmental and public health issues in the region.
Zabbey expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work being carried out at the facilities, emphasizing that the commissioning of these projects marks another step toward fulfilling HYPREP’s mandate of providing potable water to impacted communities.
He reiterated that the organization is committed to improving the living standards of the Ogoni people through comprehensive initiatives, including public health interventions, environmental remediation, and sustainable livelihood programs.
The Project Coordinator noted that access to clean water is a crucial aspect of the broader efforts to restore and revitalize the Ogoni environment, which has suffered decades of degradation due to hydrocarbon pollution.
HYPREP’s projects aim to address these challenges holistically, ensuring not only environmental recovery but also significant improvements in the health and well-being of the affected communities.
The completion of these water schemes underscores the importance of collaboration between HYPREP and local stakeholders in driving progress.
It also reflects the organization’s determination to fulfill its obligations as part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommendations for Ogoniland cleanup.
With the commissioning of these two projects, HYPREP aims to make a tangible difference in the lives of residents by addressing a critical need and laying the foundation for sustainable development in the region.
