Hunger: CAMIC seeks action against food wastage

By Obiabin Onukwugha

Advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has appealed to individuals, businesses, and policymakers to take urgent steps in addressing food waste through sustainable practices.

The body’s appeal is contained in a statement by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, in Abuja on Tuesday, February 11.

According to CAMIC, as food insecurity and environmental challenges rise, harnessing, reusing, and recycling food waste is crucial for a greener and healthier future.

The body cited the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), report which says nearly one-third of all food produced globally is wasted, thereby contributing to environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

CAMIC stated that with the right approaches, food waste can be turned into an opportunity rather than a burden.

The body urged individuals and households to adopt sustainable food management practices.

It said: “As an organization committed to climate action, CAMIC is working with stakeholders to promote policies that support food waste reduction, sustainable consumption, and circular economy practices.

“We encourage citizens to join the movement by integrating these small yet impactful changes into their daily lives. Together, we can turn food waste into an opportunity for sustainability, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.”
