The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has reminisced over the circumstances leading to her exit from the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet to become the world’s number two administrator.
In an interview on Channels TV, Tuesday, Amina told a story about her leaving the Buhari Cabinet, where she was Minister of Environment, to become DSG at the UN.
“I was sitting in a meeting in Marrakech (Morocco), and Banki Moon said we think the new Sec Gen will ask you to come and work with him,” she recalled.
“I told PMB he shouldn’t say yes if they come to ask him, and I felt very confident he wouldn’t say yes,” Amina reminisced further, adding, “Then I went on to India, and I got a call from UNSG asking me to be his DSG.”
She recalled: “I said with a lot of confidence, I can’t leave, I’m committed to PMB,” saying, “I was very confident PMB would also say no.”
The UN DSG went further: “Then they told me PMB was looking for me, and I went to see him. He talked to me for a long time about service, and then I realized where he was going.”
Amina quoted the late President Buhari saying: “But of course the decision is yours,” recalling, “But I knew the only thing I could say was, Yes Sir, I will do it.”
She remarked: “The rest is history.”
