HIV/AIDS: Benue State intensifies efforts to end transmission in 2021

The Benue state Ministry of Health and Human Services has reiterated its commitment to end HIV/ AIDS transmission in the state by 2021 while confirming that over 188 persons are already on treatment.

This information was disclosed by the director of public health in the ministry, Dr. Terna Kur, during the review of the 2020 annual operational plans (AOP) and the development of the 2021 for health sector response in the state by global funds in collaboration with Health Nigeria Initiative with Benue State government held in Oturkpo Local Government Area.

Represented at the occasion by the Deputy of Health, Dr. Terver Tule, the Director said, significant improvement was made in the 2020 AOP which was close to attaining UNAID target of 95 percent of people knowing their HIV/ AIDS status, 95 percent accessing treatment and 95 percent vile supplication which result in total epidemic control.

Doctor Tule explained that over 188 persons in Benue State were already on treatment and attributed the feat to an enabling environment provided by the state government which accounts for people knowing their HIV/AIDS status.

The State coordinator of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases control program, Dr. Gabriel Anefu, commended stakeholders for supporting AIDS comprehensive HIV/AIDS sites in the state and 58 prevention of mother to child transmission and expressed appreciation with the support of aiding public health initiatives to implement HIV/AIDS progress.

He named the comprehensive sites that provide HIV/AIDS testing services, treatment and laboratory services to be accessed by the public to include Madonna Hospital, Makurdi, Comprehensive Health Care, Adi in Buruku Local Government Area, Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Vandeikya, General Hospitals Gboko, Lessel Katsina-Ala, Tse Agberagba and Oju respectively.
