Heavy rainstorm kills three, wreak havoc in Imo

Not fewer than three persons have been confirmed dead and 35 electric poles destroyed in Imo state after heavy rainstrom wreaked havoc in Obinze, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

Also, two church buildings and a brewery depot were also destroyed.

According to a source, no fewer than 12 persons wounded at the incident that occured along the Obinze-Umuokanne road.

The source said, “The raging wind dismantled no less than 35 electric poles along the Umuokanne-Obinze road. It also claimed three lives and destroyed two church buildings and a brewery depot.

“Another building that collapsed is a beer depot belonging to a businessman in the area. We have not seen this kind of havoc before. This is very unfortunate and the losses are huge.”

One of the churches destroyed by the rainstorm was identified as Beyond Principalities and Powers Ministry.

A resident of the area, Chigozie Nwosu, who spoke to the Punch said the destruction caused by the strong wind had frightened the people in the area.

When contacted, the police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed that only one death was reported to the police.
