Heavy Rain Causes Jail Break in Niger State

A torrential downpour on Wednesday night resulted in significant damage to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, leading to the escape of 118 inmates, according to a statement by Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The severe rainfall caused extensive damage to the custodial centre’s infrastructure, including breaching the perimeter fence, which allowed the inmates to flee.
In response, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) activated recapture protocols and is collaborating with other security agencies to apprehend the escaped inmates.
As of now, 10 of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, with efforts underway to locate and apprehend the remaining individuals.
Acknowledging the vulnerability of aging facilities, many constructed during the colonial era, Duza affirmed the NCoS’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure to prevent such incidents.
Francis John, Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, assured the public that the situation is under control and urged citizens to continue their daily activities without fear.
He encouraged vigilance and prompt reporting of any suspicious activities or sightings of the escaped inmates to the nearest security agency.
Meanwhile, concerns about overcrowding in Nigerian prisons have been highlighted in a recent report by the United States, which noted a significant increase in inmate populations beyond capacity in correctional facilities across the country.
The report emphasized the systemic challenges faced by these facilities, some of which have historical origins dating back several decades.
The incident underscores the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and proactive measures to enhance security in correctional facilities across Nigeria.
