Heatwave comes to Germany as forest fire rises

Parts of Germany were raised to the highest forest fire alert level as dry conditions and a heatwave that had helped to fuel blazes elsewhere in Europe began to affect the country.

In 10 of Germany’s 16 states, predominately in the south, west, and north-east, the highest of five alert stages had been issued.

The Bavarian forestry minister called on the public to take special care when walking through forests, warning that heat alone does not cause a fire but that even an errant cigarette butt could ignite an inferno.

Temperatures were expected to soar to 40 degrees Celsius in Germany on Tuesday, with the German heat record of 41.2 degrees in 2019 possibly under threat.

On Monday, a forest fire erupted in a national park in the eastern German state of Saxony.

While authorities declared that the fire was under control, they also warned of the risk of the flames reigniting.

Another forest fire near the city of Essen in western Germany was brought under control by firefighters on Tuesday morning.

The affected area had been soaked with large quantities of water to prevent further fires.

Dry conditions and high temperatures had created the perfect conditions for fires to ignite and spread quickly in many parts of Europe.

The last week had seen numerous wildfires erupt in Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, among others.

Germany’s rivers were also under strain from the hot, dry weather.
