Guinea Bissau appeals to ECOWAS for assistance in protecting environment

It has been requested that the Economic Community of West African States, also known as ECOWAS, give its member states more authority in the area of forest preservation.

Joao Lona Tchedna, the Coastal Project Coordinator for the National Institute of Meteorology of Guinea Bissau, made the call while he was presenting at the delocalized meeting of the ECOWAS Parliament’s Joint Committee on Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources/ Infrastructure/ Energy and Mines/ Industry and Private Sector in Bissau, the Capital of Guinea Bissau. The meeting was held in Bissau.

The meeting, which started on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, will focus on the following topic: “A critical look at the ECOWAS Environmental Policy and Climate Strategy, as well as a biennial review of the agricultural production, food, and nutritional security in Member States.”

According to Tchedna, Guinea-low Bissau’s food production is a result of the environmental challenges the country faces; as a result, the country requires assistance from other countries.

According to him, “despite the many areas that need improvement, the region should pay particular attention to the following performance categories, which include National Private Sector Investment in Agriculture, Foreign Private Sector Investment in Agriculture, Access to finance, and Eradicating Hunger.” Unfortunately, the availability of financial resources has been raised multiple times across the two reporting periods.

Olujimi Biodun Christine, a senator representing Ekiti South and a member of the Nigerian parliament, reacted to the presentation that took place on the sidelines of the meeting by praising Guinea Bissau for its efforts to preserve its environment and calling on the Nigerian government to investigate the development and ensure that it is successful in Nigeria as well. Christine was speaking in response to a presentation that was made by Guinea Bissau.
