Group trains 50 journalists on climate change reporting in Bauchi

The Global Environmental and Climate Conservation Initiative (GECCI), a Bauchi-based NGO, has begun the training of 50 journalists on climate change reporting.

Mr Abdulhamid Tahir, Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, stated this at the inauguration of the exercise on Monday in Bauchi.

He said the exercise is being implemented in collaboration between the GECCI, African Climate Reporters and Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State council.

Tahir said the exercise was designed to exposed the participants to dynamics of climate change to enhance their operations.

He said that some international donor organisations had initiated fund to promote environmental journalism, and urged the participants to avail themselves the opportunities by accessing the fund to build their capacities.

Earlier, Shehu Jalam, Permanent Secretary, Bauchi State Ministry of Information and Communication, lauded the gesture, adding that the exercise would improve the capacity of journalists in the state.

He said the exercise would also enhance awareness creation towards mitigating the effects of climate change in the society.

He said the state government would also collaborate with development organisations to train journalists on election coverage ahead of the 2023 general election.

Dr Kabir Ibrahim, Director-General, Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), reiterated commitment of the agency to work out modalities that would enhance capacity building of journalists in the state.

“If journalists are consistent in reporting the ecosystem, the issues of climate change will be reduce by 45 per cent in the next 30 years,” he said.
