Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited has converted over 90 percent of its vehicle fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG).
The oil firm has also planted more than 25,000 trees as part of its climate action initiatives.
These efforts contributed to the company winning the Outstanding Oil and Gas Company award at the 2025 National Sustainability Achievements Awards.
The award ceremony, organized by ESG Impact Consulting Ltd., recognized leading companies in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices under the theme “Nigeria’s Green Transition Efforts & Climate Change Revolution.”
Sterling Oil’s Head of Operations and Human Resources, David Walker, highlighted the company’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Nigeria’s shift to cleaner energy sources.
In addition to upgrading its vehicle fleet, Sterling Oil modernized its marine barges to double-hull designs to better protect inland waterways.
The company has also installed recycling machines capable of processing up to 100 kilograms of waste per hour and reduced routine gas flaring by converting waste gas into usable energy.
Sterling Oil maintains an ambitious tree-planting program with a survival rate between 60% and 80%, covering over 1,000 square meters of green infrastructure.
Walker emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability as a legacy of responsible growth beyond regulatory compliance.
Other companies recognized at the awards included Dangote Sugar, Ikeja Hotels Plc, Africa Prudential Plc, BUA Foods, and GREE, reflecting growing ESG leadership in Nigeria’s corporate sector.
Dada Ajai-Ikhile, Chairman of the Awards Organizing Committee, praised the winners for shaping a greener future for the country.
