Green Energy: FG to produce Bio-Ethanol fuel from Cassava

The South East zone of Nigeria is set to experience a significant boost to its economy as the Federal Government announces plans to establish a Cassava-Bio-Ethanol project in the region.

This exciting initiative was revealed by Nebeolisa Anako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Budget, and Planning, during a regional awareness and sensitization workshop held in Enugu recently.

The event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and Planning exclusively for the South East zone.

Nebeolisa emphasized the importance of Bio-Ethanol and highlighted Nigeria’s position as the largest producer of cassava, stating that it is essential to leverage the potential of the cassava value chain to further enhance the nation’s economy.

Naturenews reports that Cassava-Bio-Ethanol project refers to an initiative aimed at utilizing cassava, a widely cultivated crop in Nigeria, to produce Bio-Ethanol, a type of renewable fuel derived from organic matter, such as agricultural crops or residues.

In this case, cassava, which is abundant in Nigeria and particularly in the South East region, is chosen as the primary raw material for the production of bioethanol.

The project involves setting up infrastructure and facilities to process cassava into bioethanol, which can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels in various applications.

Bioethanol can be blended with gasoline to create biofuels that can power vehicles and machinery. It is considered a cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel option, as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on finite fossil fuel resources.

The Cassava-Bio-Ethanol project, initiated by the Federal Government, is regarded as a pilot project that will begin in the South East before expanding to other parts of the country.

“The Federal Government has awarded this project as a concession, accompanied by a supporting take-off grant,” Nebeolisa explained.

He further expressed his belief that the project’s success would lead to its replication in all zones of the country.

The implications of this endeavour are far-reaching and promising, as it has the potential to uplift people out of poverty, stimulate industrial development, and enhance research methods and capacities.

In attendance at the event was Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, who urged residents of Enugu and the South East to embrace the concept of Bio-Economy to foster economic growth in the region.

Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, stressed that the Bio-Economy’s value chain could help prevent the exodus of young people seeking opportunities abroad.

Governor Mbah expressed his optimism regarding the Cassava-Bioethanol project initiated by the Federal Government. He believes that if the project succeeds, it will generate employment opportunities, dissuading youths from leaving the country in search of greener pastures.

By establishing the Cassava-Bio-Ethanol project, the Federal Government aims to leverage Nigeria’s status as a major cassava producer and unlock the economic potential of the crop. The project not only contributes to the country’s energy security by promoting renewable energy sources but also creates opportunities for job creation, rural development, and economic growth, particularly in the South East zone where the project is being initiated as a pilot project.

The utilization of cassava for bioethanol production also adds value to the crop’s value chain. It encourages farmers to increase cassava cultivation, promotes agricultural productivity, and stimulates agro-industries involved in cassava processing and ethanol production.

Additionally, the project may lead to advancements in research methods and capacities, fostering technological innovation and knowledge transfer in the region.

The Cassava-Bio-Ethanol project generally represents a strategic initiative to harness the potential of cassava and renewable energy resources, with the aim of benefiting the economy, reducing environmental impact, and promoting sustainable development in the Southeast zone and beyond.

The workshop attracted heads of institutions, ministries, and agencies who recognize the immense potential and benefits that the Cassava-Bio-Ethanol project holds for the region.
