Govt., sector practitioners collaborate to tackle Ghana’s WASH challenges

The Ghanaian government allocated 20 percent of the District Assembly Common Fund—approximately GHS1.2 billion—to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions nationwide.

Minister for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, made the announcement Monday during the opening of the 36th MOLE WASH Conference at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region, stressing that addressing sanitation requires collaboration between government and sector practitioners.

“The President is bent on fixing the sanitation and WASH challenges, but we need practitioners’ input, not just we the politicians,” Ibrahim said, highlighting President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to a cleaner and healthier Ghana.

Organised by the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), the MOLE XXXVI Conference aims to promote innovation, partnerships, and evidence-based strategies to accelerate progress in Ghana’s WASH sector.

The initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.

This year’s conference, themed “Advancing innovation, partnerships and evidence for a harmonised and regulated WASH sector in Ghana,” brings together government agencies, civil society, development partners, and researchers to strengthen collaboration, promote sustainable financing, and ensure accountability in achieving national WASH targets.
