The Oyo State Government has intensified efforts to end open defecation through a new sanitation campaign led by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said the campaign began on Saturday with the construction of a public toilet facility at Ojoo Market.
Flagging off the project, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said the initiative is part of the state’s efforts to improve sanitation, promote public health and eliminate open defecation in collaboration with UNICEF.
Aderinto noted that the state aims to end open defecation by 2031, urging residents and visitors to support the government’s sanitation drive.
He said providing public toilets in busy areas such as markets would help curb indiscriminate defecation and protect public health.
The commissioner also commended the management of Open Public Spaces, led by Mr. Abdulateef Abdulganiyu, for supporting the government’s environmental agenda.
According to him, the project will provide traders, residents and visitors with a hygienic alternative and help improve sanitation practices across the state.
