Business is booming.

Gombe Tomato Farmer’s Success Story

Salisu Danjuma, an entrepreneur from the Difa community in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, has successfully turned his passion for tomato farming into a thriving business that generates over N2.5 million annually.

With 15 years of dedicated experience in the field, Danjuma has not only built a profitable venture but also created opportunities for local youths, making agriculture a viable path to success in his community.

In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Danjuma shared his journey into agriculture, describing how he first became involved in tomato farming.

Initially motivated by the desire to provide for his family, he quickly realized the potential for growth within the agricultural sector.

“I started small, but as I learned more about cultivation techniques and market demands, I expanded my operations,” he said.

During the dry season, Danjuma focuses primarily on tomato farming, harvesting over 55 large baskets each week.

His tomatoes are transported to major markets in Enugu, Rivers, and other southern states, where they are in high demand. “Each large basket sells for N11,000, while medium baskets are priced at N8,000.

This income has enabled me to support my family and provide jobs for around 70 youths in my community, helping them earn their daily livelihoods,” he explained.

Despite the lucrative nature of tomato farming, Danjuma faces significant challenges. The rising costs of fertilizers and agrochemicals have started to erode his profit margins, making it difficult to maintain his income levels.

“While I find tomato farming profitable, the expenses associated with fertilizers and chemicals are increasingly high. It’s a constant battle to balance costs and profits,” he noted.

He also mentioned that irrigation farming, although essential for consistent yields, comes with higher operational costs.
Recognizing the untapped potential within the agricultural sector, Danjuma is a strong advocate for youth involvement in farming.

He believes that with the right resources, young people can transform their lives through agriculture.

“I encourage the youth in our community to explore agricultural opportunities. There are many water bodies available for irrigation, and with proper management, they can significantly increase their yields,” he stated.

Danjuma emphasized that in today’s Nigeria, waiting on the government for job opportunities is no longer practical. “The government cannot employ all the youths, but agriculture offers a pathway to financial independence.

Many young people can earn better incomes than traditional civil service jobs if they invest their efforts in farming,” he said.

Throughout the year, Danjuma adapts his farming practices to seasonal changes. During the wet season, he relocates to different plots to avoid flooding, demonstrating his resilience and adaptability in the face of environmental challenges.

“This flexibility is crucial; it keeps me busy and prevents idleness. I believe in staying proactive and making the most of every season,” he explained.

In addition to advocating for youth participation in agriculture, Danjuma has called on the state government to invest more in irrigation infrastructure.

He argues that sustainable food production cannot rely solely on wet season farming.

“If the government supports the establishment of irrigation facilities, more youths can engage in dry season farming, which is often more profitable and can help alleviate unemployment,” he said.

Furthermore, Danjuma has appealed for the creation of mini-processing facilities to reduce post-harvest losses, which can significantly impact farmers’ incomes.

“Processing facilities can help us add value to our produce and minimize waste. This will ensure that farmers like me can maximize our earnings and contribute to food security in the state,” he concluded.

Through his dedication and hard work, Salisu Danjuma exemplifies the potential of agriculture as a means of economic empowerment.

His story serves as an inspiration for many young people in Gombe State and beyond, highlighting the importance of innovation, resilience, and community engagement in the quest for sustainable livelihoods.
