Gombe communities beg for water due to extreme heat
By Grace Samuel
Eleven communities situated along the Gombe-Bauchi road in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State are grappling with severe water scarcity.
With a combined population exceeding 2,000 individuals, the residents find themselves in the throes of an oppressive heatwave, aggravated further by the absence of clean water.
In their plea for assistance, these communities implore both governmental bodies and philanthropic individuals to extend aid by providing access to water.
The situation has reached a critical juncture, with the inhabitants facing dire circumstances, and any intervention aimed at mitigating their plight would be profoundly impactful in enhancing their overall well-being.
Representing these communities, Malam Idris Abubakar articulates the severity of the situation, emphasizing that while the government may not be able to facilitate piped water distribution or borehole installation, the drilling of wells would markedly ameliorate their predicament.
Remaining optimistic, the residents express hope that their appeal will resonate with relevant authorities, prompting swift action to furnish them with the fundamental necessity of clean water.
During the observance of Ramadan, numerous communities across Gombe State, including Akko, Wuro Bogga, Garin Baraya, Malam Jamo, Gamadadi, Konkeje, and Tongo, confront an acute shortage of potable water.
This scarcity poses a significant challenge during the evening breaking of fast, a pivotal aspect of the holy month.
One resident, Idris, underscores the urgent need for assistance, urging those capable of providing aid to step forward.
He stresses the critical importance of securing clean water before the relentless heat exacts a toll on their well-being.
Furthermore, neighboring communities such as Lawanti, Jalingo, Dunomari, Boggae, and Marori also grapple with water scarcity, despite their proximity to the Gombe State capital, located no more than ten kilometers away.
It is imperative that concerted efforts are undertaken to support these communities during this trying period, ensuring equitable access to clean water for the observance of Ramadan rituals and maintenance of hydration levels.
