Gombe Allocates N389 Million Compensation for Erosion Control

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability and community welfare, the Gombe State Executive Council has given its nod to the disbursement of N389 million as compensation for residents affected by the gully erosion control project at the Federal College of Education Technical.
Malam Mohammed Magaji, the Commissioner for Finance, made this announcement following the SEC meeting recently, in Gombe, the state capital.
This erosion control initiative falls under the ACRESAL project, a World Bank-assisted effort aimed at addressing land degradation and climate change challenges in northern Nigeria.
Magaji highlighted the World Bank’s mandate, which necessitates compensating property owners, benefiting nearly 1,000 individuals in this instance.
The approved compensation, according to Magaji, serves a dual purpose: ensuring the smooth resettlement of affected individuals and upholding their rights in both residential and commercial properties.
“There are also stipends for the elderly living in that area so they can have a good livelihood,” added Magaji, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to community support.
Hajiya Aishatu Maigari, the Commissioner for Education, also reported on positive developments within the SEC.
The council has sanctioned the upgrade of five mega senior secondary schools in the state, aligning improvements with each school’s specific needs.
This initiative aims to elevate school infrastructure to global standards, encompassing the construction of toilets, installation of solar-powered lights, road enhancements, establishment of school clinics, and provision of boreholes.
Furthermore, Maigari highlighted the state government’s commitment to environmental interventions.
On November 23, the government signed a N12 billion contract with Triacta Nigeria Ltd. for a 21-kilometer gully erosion control project in six communities within Gombe metropolis.
This substantial investment underscores Gombe’s dedication to holistic development and environmental resilience.
